I don't know Leo...can you come to San Francisco in a couple weeks and skate with me? I could probably help you sort it out. Better yet...can you take some digital pictures of your board and email them to my email address? I could look them over and see if I notice anything out of wack.

JRC, Slalom can be done anywhere there happens to be enough space to safely put down cones. When I first started, I skated mostly on flat ground so I could learn the proper way to generate speed. Flat ground and slight incline slalom are some ways I use to train. The majority of the races in the US are done on hills of varing pitches and surfaces.
Simon is a master of generating speed...I learned a lot from him a year ago when I was lucky enough to skate with him a few times before the first stop of the 2002 FCR Tour.
Cheers!

Leo's starter deck

Leo, regarding the deck with Indy 101's. My set up with indy's include longer kingpins front and rear. This will give you more range for bushing adjustment and should eliminate the tippy / wheelbite issues. The stock kingpins seem short for loose set ups ( end of threads ) What do you think Mike? Works for me ! Good luck in Paso ! Ride on Leo ! J.

Mike, Alan Sidlo donated 3 SSD and some 110 seismics. i setup the decks as follows: 1.- Deck with indys 101 blue doh-doh´s front and yellow in back, with la costas 78a and abec5 speedmaster bearings. 1 angled riser on each truck PLUS wheel wells 2.-Deck with Fultracks with blue doh-dohs front and blue doh doh on bottom and the big stock bushing with the edges, rounded on top on the back truck, same wheels and bearings. it has one 3/8 and 1 angled riser on each truck. 3. deck with seismics front andback, both yellow springs, same wheels. 3/8 risers on each truck.
if i pump them real hard i would get wheelbite in all of them, or again ig i tighten the trucks the back wheels lieft from the ground.

mr. maysey,
i'm new to slalom and i've had this question for a while and i figured you could help me out. ok, well, i always thought that slalomers ran cones down some sort of a hill or bank so you could keep your speed. then i saw simon levene's(sp?) part in speedfreaks, and he's just running cones in some school yard, no banks or hill, just flat ground, and he's hauling; i was perplexed by how fast he was going under his own power. ever since then i've wondered which way is the right way to slalom or most popular these days or whatever, i'm just clueless about everything and need some direction. anything you could offer or anyone else would be great.
THANKS

I second Sgt. Holl's comments - it was a very fun morning of hill activity for everyone. Definitely, a good vibe. The Turner boys got there very early to set the Faux Pas(o) course before the Comet Bomb Squad rolled up rather late (imagine that!) for some equally fast descents...thanks to Mike, Erik, John and Gary for setting it all up.
Clayton, Jonathan and Jason are in fine form given their recent break from riding - and then there is Sully, channeling his many years of race honed mountain bike killer instinct, he is loaded for bear and his new secret prototype Comet long raceboard didn't hurt either - he will be a major force at Paso - just you wait and see...

Hey Leo, one more thing. You might want to try changing the bushings in your trucks. If you still have the stock ones that might explain why you have to have them so loose to make 6' gates. Try the Bones Hardcore bushings. I used the Yellows in the back and Blues in the front...I weigh about 175lbs. You might want to adjust the softness/hardness of the bushings based on your body weight.

Leo, I would just add the 3/8 riser under the angled one for added clearance.

add 3/8 risers plus the angled ones, and if u can make some wheels wells to the deck it would help a lot
Question: what should i do if:
i get wheel bite and tighten the trucks but that causes the wheels to lift from the ground, hence loose traction? i i loose the trucks to a "rideable" tightness but can do 6´cones?

Hi Joe,
I hope it's cool with Mike if I jump in here. I ride my BB with Cadillac Redlines and the same truck set-up as you. I haven't experienced wheel bite yet. Maybe I run my trucks a bit tighter. Did you get this board directly from Bahne? Let me know, maybe I can help you out.

Hey Joe, did you put on riser pads? Sounds silly, but if you forgot those...by chance...you'd be experiencing wheelbite. Maybe you should try tightening the trucks a little if you have risers on. Speaking of risers, you could get some extra long hardward and add another riser under the angled riser and remedy your wheels bite.
Hope this helps

Wheel bite on my Bhane black hills

So I just got a Bhane Black hills model starter deck set up with tracker RT-X on the front and RT-S on the back with stingers for wheels. I am getting a bad wheel bite on the heel side at least. Can't hardly make any kind of race type turn with out getting thrown off the board. What am I doing wrong.

Avalons and Avilas

Just wanted to add my two cents to the Avalon vs. Avila discussion. I had an interesting weekend experimenting with the the Big Avilas at JPL. First off, I love the damn things. The ride and roll is so plush I hate to take them off. On Saturday I had a headwind at JPL so strong that I rode the Avilas with ease, and got some good GS pumping practice in. On Sunday, I had a tailwind. Suddenly the Avilas were way too fast and wouldn't corner at all, terrifying. Same trucks, deck, course, rider. I put the old trusty Avalons back on and had a great session. I think the Avilas will be damn-the-torpedoes type of wheel to use on a course where extreme offsets are not a problem, and pure down the line rolling speed is needed, as opposed to traction and manueverability. For most courses, I expect the Avalons to still remain dominant.

That's cool you guys don't conflict Leo.
I was looking forward to skating with you as well, but since I just left my job a couple weeks ago, money will be somewhat of an issue for the travel plans this summer. I wanted to fly to Breck as well for the FCR race, but don't think I can swing it. At this point I don't even know if I'll be able to make it to La Costa...if that race happens this year.
A note on surface and wheel cleaning...
a few days ago we were talking about cleaning wheels between runs on hot days. Would this apply more to good surfaces (7 or better) and not apply so much to worse surfaces (6 or worse)? I skated yesterday on what some might call a 4 surface, well maybe not THAT bad, but not nearly as good as Elsinore and I never had a problem with dirty wheels. I was riding 85 Avalons all the way around. I slid on many of my turns but never completely lost traction. It was a cool day and like I said the surface was rather bad...not Dump Road bad, but bad. Did this happen because it was cool temperature-wise and I was riding a very 'open' grain surface...was it some of each or one of the other?

Mkie too bad u are going to miss TG3, i was looking fwd to skate with u.
now, formaking it a good slalom post:
When the race organizers will "organize" between themselves and avoid to make races the same day?
The very 1st thing we do when we make a race its to check the flipers calendar and the surf calendar, if theres any competition those days we move our race to the next available day. so far it has worked cause instead of sharing the riders/spectators we can count on a lot of public and good competitors.

Eli, you pansy...get out and skate with the pros. I'll call you later and we can talk equipment and stuff. Dude, we had a good proactice yesterday that you should have made it to. Although, you're used to going very fast in traffic, so maybe you didn't need the practice.
Talk to you later today

Judi, you guys missed a valuable practice. Gary and I set up a couple courses that we based on the Jack's descriptions of what the course will be like. Hopefully we were prracticing the right stuff!!! Pass throughs are really run. Going through a gate with someone either in front, behind or beside is going to be exciting.
I can't wait for Saturday!!!
