Erin,
your so right, i've been a bit of a technique stalker the last few weeks, finding all the vids to watch of people pumping and skumping, it is very different all over, but foot placement is also quite varied, you and James both have your foot the truck alot of the time, but i cant get the hang of it, i keep tipping the nose???
As for muscles, i hurt my sides and stomach pretty bad a week or so ago, like you say a little too much/hard, but the left side of my back (waist) seems to take the most of it (front foot), this could be down to my tubbyness. hehe

Things change Chris. ;-)
LDP'ing is evolving.
and,
most shocking of all, its not only the 'boys' that are doing it!

Oh jeez. People love pointing the finger and say HE SAID PUMPING WAS BORING! I like variety. I like to mix it up. So let me restate the "boring" issue. Pumping long distances is not my preference. Adding a skog to pump and pump to skog routine with a swtich stance pump here and there makes for a great outting in my hood. Since this thread is nothing but pumping, I should just STFU about skogging.
And I remember when this thread was just a baby. And I remember pumping the streets way back in the mid70's :D
Nice to see the energy boys! PUMP YOUR DECK!!!! PUMP IT GOOD!
cheers Chris Yandall
P.S. i could've sworn the original skumping site mentioned it was a blend of skogging and pumping. i must be getting senile !!!! more ginko please!

Just responding to Chris'notions of Ld pumping getting boring. I'll have to join the chorus and say.. I have plenty of times been tired,and/or sore.. but never bored! It's too much fun! OK, now that we've heard of different pumping stances and foot positions, and to reduce any potential, but not likely, threat of 'pump boredom', why doesn't anyone mention that pump style generally know as... butt 1st. Seriously speaking..I almost always include a little backwards pumping into my sessions, even if I'm not doing excessively long distances. Really, it's both fun and refreshing, but can be a little dangerous if you're not careful in making the transition, wherein, the heels of the feet start to lead the'pump motion'. Generally, once you got your pump motion going, which most of you know seems to come in the form of a "groove" of rhythmic circles, you can keep this motion while carefully starting to point your toes towards the tail of your board. Little by little, and without losing rhythm, your heels can start guiding the motion, giving the balls of your feet, which usually recieve most of the pump work load, a little rest. And many different groups of muscles are also used, including that part of the body sometimes known as "the anterior portion"...Ok.. the Butt! So a little word of advice for all you pumpers and would-be pumpers. When life gets you down, or when your skateboard parts are more than 3 weeks late...go grab your board, raise up your spirits, and...let your BUTT guide you to many new horizons!...oh but remember.. watchout for the telephone poles! Any Butt 1st'ers out there? ..and I'm not referring to any type of San Francisco political party.. either!!

Hey Munchh, yeah I am wondering how different body types translate the long distance pump technique. That said I'll be working on improving my technique thanks to some 'virtual coaching' from James (thanks James :-) ). Hands closer together, more bend in the knees.... It will be interesting to see how the next vid will look.
It would be cool if others could post pumping vids. Action talks louder than words! And other beginners like me can see what the sport looks like and have an opportunity to compare themselves to other newbs as well as be inspired by those more experienced.
Yeah the Carver CX's are quite wedged in the front and the rear is slightly dewedged. And of course, loose front truck, to the point where the washer can be spun by hand....! The big soft Avilas just happen to work well for the rough pavement and bricks on my ldp'ing route. If the pavement was smoother I'd opt for some Zig Zags. I may give my 77a Reflex Gumballs a try on this route soon. It will be interesting to feel if there is a significant difference.
As for settting records, I'm kind of having a hard time getting into that as I find that pumping makes me just want to groove to the music and keep time with a skate pal. Kind of doesn't gear me up for setting speed records like slalom does. Just my two toonies worth tho.

Derek,
I know where your coming from, I just got hooked on slalom and want to get better so badly, but i'm a natural sprinter and i'm finding the LDP stamina thing a bit of a problem, so i dont think i'll be breaking ang of JP's records, but hey i love to pump along, i'm still getting the hang of this carver cx, but it all makes me better.
Erin, you looking good girl, i thought you looked a bit stiff like me at 1st, but you have a bit of a bounce goin on and riding on '3' wheels seems to be the norm i see, but i spose we probly all look different doin it, are you still running the cx wedged?

right on munchh- thanks :)
yeah- the differences in pavement and trails would definitely be a factor, but that's exactly what would be helpful. when we get feedback about which setups work best, and the ideal trail, and all that stuff, that can come in pretty handy for finding some very efficient grooves. and i like a good groove just as much as anyone, but there is definitely a side of me that likes to push it, and to see how fast i can go. I converted to this sport from distance running, and i guess i still have that mentaility with pace and time... nonetheless, it's great to have milestones to judge our growth and improvement, whatever the activity.

Peters, Peters, Peters,
he's singing your song man, Peters is the guy to do this (if he wants to??) he has far more stats than enyone i should imagine, although its gonna be hard to standardize like 'cyber' or 'trap' how many tails are gonna be the same, one side of a road is very diffrent to the other, so i think there would have to be a fare bit of maths!!!!
Your right though, this skumping thing is getting more popular every day, so some ideas of target times for distance might be fun, but i dont know about you lot, but i dont do it to be the fastest, i'm just groovin' dood.

with all the activity here focused on long-distance pumping, it would be cool to have some kind of measuring stick for what is going on out there. Silversurfer wrote over a year ago that it would be interesting to have some distance records up here, including 1/4 mile, 1 mile, and 3 mile...
the cyber slalom challenge would be a great template to start with for something like that. i thought of a few possible standards:
1. rolling start (at a speed not exceeding your average pace) 2. some kind of standard for elevation gain/loss, with no hills on the course (uphill or downhill) exceeding a certain slope. 3. the entire length of the course must be pumped
as for the first two up there, gps watches are incredibly helpful for statistics like that. And while the measurements may not be absolutely perfect, these gps thingies do provide relatively accurate distances.
anyone have any ideas on this? it would be great to get some input here...

Dude for some reason I thought skumping was a blend of skogging and pumping. Therefore, I am not skumping! So scratch what I said, in your def: touching the ground is verbotten and therefore, I am no long skumping but skogging and pumping!..
do you skumpers ever sit down? do you just jump up and all of a sudden you are airborne til you get to your boards and never touch the ground?
i can imagine pumping hard on one side and then totally switching to keep the motion going. i'm still learning!

i think it's totally cool if somebody can pump from sunup to sundown without putting their foot down. and i don't see how that could get boring any more than any other endeavor. I've been doing this long distance pumping thing for about 5 years. rather than getting bored with it, i learn something new every time i go out for a ride. keep that stoke goin' james!

Al - the cool thing is that rides fit into my weekly routine partly by LUCK (home to work == one long commuting trail) and the fact that this replaces gym time and is far more productive. My only other wish would be to have months free for distance rides like the Jack Smith SAA crew, the Adam Colton gang, or Cornwaithe shooting across Australia. But THAT one's a hard sell to the wife, and my boss...
Erin, that rocks to see the growing community up north with Jeff and now newbie pumpers, if you get any events going be sure to let us know, and stick it up on the RoeRacing calendar! http://www.localendar.com/public/roeslalom

Chris, the last time I gave a rip about what other people thought of me or anything I do was probably 20+ years ago, the jitters of becoming a high school freshman.
Don't let what the skater kids say bug ya. I pass them on the trail and hear the sound of jaws dropping more than the crap you seem to hear on the boardwalk. For every one skeptic, I hear about ten people AMPED to know more about, or even get into pumping distances. 'boring and repetitious' aren't even in my skate vernacular. Switch pump stance is how you balance out the muscles, when you feel the need.
I used to play jazz, salsa, and classical trumpet, with 1 to 2 hour-long sets. I've found long distance pumping to be a pure extension of that. I never get "bored" trying new pump styles, switching pump stance, alternating rhythms, picking a never ending and always-changing horizontal fall line down the path ahead-- its mesmerizing and addictive.
With the advances in longboard decks, trucks, and wheels, skateboarding can go way beyond sprint muscle athleticism. Long distance pumping bumps up the game to a sustained cardio. 4-5 times a week makes any mellow, cruising weekend or evening ride with my bros feel like an easy walk through the park.
This all reminds me of one pavedwave article quote ... "When I hang out with inspired people, a conversation feels like jumping on a trampoline. When I hang out with uninspired people, it feels like being 100 pounds overweight, and jumping on the sidewalk."
Get out and skate! (Now just have to choose between my park board, carveboard, DH, slalom...)

I am so stoked! This morning my skatepal calls me up and says, "Would you teach me to pump?" How cool is that?! I dropped what I was doing and leap up shouting into the phone, "Yes, FOR SURE!"
She brought over her Insect Big Bug and we wedged and jacked up the R2's on the front. New gumballs were fairly gleaning, we were set to go. She caught on really quickly and the huge perma-smile on her face told me she was having fun, fun, fun.
I don't think it will be long before we're out there together making short work of my 12km loop. I can't believe my good fortune, someone else right here at home to pump with!!!!! How lucky is that?!

Keep goin James!..Your a great guinea pig for all those of us who want to pump such distances but really can't because of exterior circumstances such as wives and work situations. Some of us are very interested in the limits possible for pumping, but know we will probably never be able to test them. Thus, our interest in your details, such as times..and even number of pumps! I like these scrupulous statistical updates. Anyway, many of us, I think, appreciate those, like you, who want to break barriars, blaze new trails and record statistics that will pave the way for the progress of this new sport. Oh, and thanks Munchh for calling me a Guiness! ..but really I prefer Hieneken! Hairy feet Rule!!

variety is a the spice bro! and that's why there's a different msg thread covering alternate leg pushing. the young skaters kids today look at pumpers as a freak show. they are saying, why pump when you can ollie your way down the sidewalks. i get it all the time skumping down the boasrdwalks. but damn! pumpin owns!
Anyways, alternating your legs might help you move over to the other exercise gym set of muscle development. Pumping long distances is a great endeavor but like anything else repititious, get's boring and will give you way uneven body fatigue in my opinion. I dont have anything against pumping other than people who put on the blinders and think they are way cool cuz they dont put any feet on the ground from sun up to sun down. wow! you go dude! enjoy. hope your feet never touch the ground ever!!!!
:P PUMP IT BABY!

We've had dry weather over the past weeks, meaning ALL PUMP commute days. Some really cool discoveries on fatigue after a solid 4-5 days, feeling it in the ABS and the BACK which must be a very good thing!! 260 miles, 22 starting pushes, 165,600 pumps... But who's counting ;-)
When it rains I bus it, or one-foot-push the rollsrolls, just going easy. Haven't learned alternate push thing 'cuz my goal's always been to keep the feet off the ground!
Munchh, will definately check into the rubber mat guy. And you should all know that wearing shoes for too long is actually THE #1 culprit for foot stank. Take 'em off and ride!! (but keep that stinky helmet on...)

HOOLEY MOLEY YOUNG HOBIT!!
just a quick hello to ya'll,
as usual the day we come home the waves are sweet, but got some time on those DP's on some lovley hills, Al your a genius!
Woolacombe is really to up and down for skumping, but i bumped into a guy who saw the 'Wasteland' sticker on my slalom deck who just happened to be in the same little village and 300 miles from home like i was and is going to the next one.
So 3 weeks to get the new deck built.
Peters, i'm stoked your on the Flatwave at last, have you thought of the old 'rubber' grip they used on GS decks for barefoot? Theres a guy on ebay that sometimes has some i'll check it out for you, he's your side of the water aswell?
