my girl bought me a book on skateboarding called "Scared for Life". its bad ass. you and sergio yuppie are in like the first 5 pages. ive been comming along on my slides but i havnt been using acual slide gloves. ive just been using leather work gloves. i finally pulled off a pendelum slide going about 25mph, i guess, and ive been doing 180s, riding backwards, and then pulling it back around. thats about it. here is the question, when you are sliding, is allot of your weight on your hand or on the board? because my gloves dont have pucks on them, i cant lean on them too hard or else it draggs me down or burns up my hand. so ive been having to pull of the slide by holding the board between my legs with one hand, while lightly putting the other hand on the ground. im finally making some gloves this weekend. also, what kind of trucks and wheels are you guys riding for downhill sliding? im currently on some 73mm 90a's with ranall 180's. i think they are too big and too soft.

Hi Cliff, Thanks a billion for taking me down Grizzly Road. For those who don't know, this is a 4 1/2 mile cruiser. Not too many cars, not too many potholes. It was an adventure. The biggest rush of all though, was clocking you at 37 mph, just before you went into a full speed, classic, film-worthy pendulum slide. You are the man. Lynn

I always thought cliff was cool. Before I met him he was a legend to me and when I finally did meet him, he was one of the most friendly people I've ever met. I'm a nobody and still after a year of not seeing him he remembers my name and greets me with a welcome "hello". Then I see his response to a lame insulting post about him and he responds with a gracious and positive post inviting they guy to skate with him as friends. Ciff is is a true inspiration.

Make gloves easy.....get a blow torch or an old camping stove cut out your plastic, put a screw in the center of it so you can hold it with = a pair of tongues or pliers over the flame till you get a lot of melt or fire, press onto the glove avoiding fumes, flame, and death. Helps if you rough the glove up on a rough stone wall or something to raise the suede or leather, gives the plastic something to grip.......job done.
Hey do it outside your house......FIRE WARNING!!!!!

sounds really good. I use laces, that allows for a bit float and flexibility, the key is sinking in the rivets or lace holes, so they don't drag and wear off immediately. I like sections of plastic, for flexibity again, sort of that vulcan hand greeting on the fingers and one big piece on the palm, the bigger the sections the more solidly they attach, with lots of points of attachment.

Cool, it's good to hear some perspectives on the slide contest and how to judge it... I'll let you know how it goes if/when it happens.
Nick, just send me an email at my posted address when you get out here in the region and we'll definitely hook up and ride! Looking forward to it.

I never really got a chance to thank Cliff for judging the slide contest and helping so much. I know there was a lot of conterversy over the slide contest and I know some people thoght they got jacked and i just wanted you to know you judged it fine. Also the wieght thing wasn't that big of an issue. I won 2nd place in the pros and I only wiegh 135 pounds ,but fatter people will proboly go faster down the hill. Mabe Cliff knows hes been skating longer than I've been breathing. Much respect.

Longest Slide contests are definately problamatic - Just watched the footage of the slide contest and the slopestlye looked awesome! Looks like an amazing fest. was had and can only wish i could have been there!
The longest slide in it definately raises issues. All slides where the board isn't 90degrees to the road are going to travel further because when the board isn't in this position- it begins to roll. Also weight is a huge issue which should be realised. Heavier people are going to travel a hell of a lot further in a slide than lighter people purely due to how much more momentum they'l have! Take F and sergio, regardless of technique its the equivalent of stopping an articulated lorry as opposed to a mini! no offence to either riders intended!
Haggy - im coming out to aus in about july via south america (feb - may) and New Zealand (May - July). Kind of a travelling with my skateboard and trying to see how many amazing hills/mountains+places it'l take me too! Would be really sick to hook up in sydney and slide some hills with you guys! been posting on all kinds of forums but as yet not getting much reponse!
sorry for the long post!

Howzit Sliders and Cliff, This is my first post in Cliffs house. About the slide contest, what about judging on slope style, all your slides in a given run. There are many sliding styles, judging by distance only eliminates many techniques. After all sliding IS about free skating. Cliff, what would it take to get a slide contest on the Old Tunnel side of Hiller Dr.? That is still the best slide run I have ever found because you regain speed so quickly between slides. I still remember the first time you took me there, you wouldn't let me out of the car to skate. As soon as you took me home I got in my car and went back, to this day it's still my favorite under 2 min. run. Alohas to all!

dHaggy,
The longest slide contest is problematic. The only way I see it working is to allow any type of slide. Otherwise you will get unhappy competitors and viewers when you try and call the slide because of the wheels pointing downhill.
About the Brazilians and the way they do it, they just do Lay Back slides and Coleman's where ethe deck is crossed up sideways for the entire slide. We only had a few who could do this at our event!
Nice to hear from you Haggy! Say hello to everyone. Next month, January 22nd, I'm off to Brazil for a month.

Jullien,
The new "cliffslider" deck is available from Pocket Pistols, but Chicken is working to up-date his web-site. Until it's done, you will have to e-mail him regarding the deck.

Hey Cliff!
I enjoy reading about your continuous world travels and skate adventures - keep up the good work and spread the good word!
Some of the guys here in Sydney are talking about having a slide contest. I read with interest your post on how to measure the slides accurately, but am still somewhat confused. I can understand that pendulum slides may be unfair given the rider's ability to gain distance by riding backwards, but what do you mean when you say "In Brazil, they only have the riders cross it up and other slides don't count." I have seen the urethane tracks left behind after slides and have noticed that the tracks cross at a certain point. But where exactly should we measure from - the beginning of the slide till ?
Thanks for any input, that would help clear up any potential problems when we have the contest.
In the meantime, Peace Out! Haggy
PS: To any naysayers, I will add that I was very impressed with Cliff's professionalism and emphasis on safety when we went riding. Not to mention his good humour and open friendliness!

I know you ride a custom deck most of the time but I heard rumors over on the other forum of a Pocket Pistols, Cliffslider collaboration. Any truth to the matter? Seems to me there simply aren't enough 36ish " boards out there, its a nice size but severely underrated amongst many. I'll be back in Berkeley (home) in a couple weeks too. I'd love to do some skating with you if you can fit me into your busy schedule. I recently got my hands on the flow video, yours and Jim Cluggish's part is sick. I love those shots of the super high speed pendulums on Centennial, with cars coming up the other way no less, nucking futs man!

Eddie,
Will's advise is correct regarding the width of trucks for the Faltown or any slide deck. You want the trucks with the wheels attached to be as wide as the deck itself. Not more and not less. Sorry I can't help you with your Faltown slide deck request. I have one and it was a gift that I will keep for my collection, little though it may be.
