I agree with Paul that this should not be a race, and we should do (or not do) whatever it takes so that it is not a race, but achieves the goal of the event. That goal is to introduce newcomers to slalom, debug equipment, try out equipment, and get the cobwebs off from the winter.
In fact, I would rather have a starting ramp than a timer -- in order to practice starts.
As the person who usually sets up the timing equipment and has to spend a lot of time getting it going and running it during races, I really enjoy having an event where there are no such hassles....

we're bringin a timer so no worries, and we'll be all hepped up on a slow I.V. drip of caffeine on the ride down

I don't really want to drive 18 hours round trip & not be timed. I vote for a timer.

Hmm, somehow what I wrote got chopped up and did'nt translate correctly in my last post but you get the gist. No timers for the first few hours until we get newbies dialed in and IF AND ONLY IF enough people want to race and on one lane only. Anyone who was there last year at the NOT-A-RACE should be able to tell you how much more RIDING they did as well as eat and blab and have fun. Every other event is a "race" waiting for cone counts, timer/tape switch problems, etc so why does this one need to be a "race" also? Frankly, "racing" burns me out bad every year. Blah, blah, blah - The Management

Hey, Actually no, it's was suppossed to be a get-together BBQ slalom session and not a race from the very beginning I started doing it in 2004 but every year some people wanted to race so I let them put a timer on one lane only so those who wanted to race could and those who just wanted to enjoy the other lane and ride a LOT more could ride and not wait around for cone counts, timer problems, tape-switch problems, etc. If you read through the race signup page, it should mention all the above and all that's below, but here's more details: Last year a timer was brought but some vital piece was missing so the event went off without a timer and so a WHOLE LOT MORE riding was done and all of us who knew what to do with equipment actually got to help out the newbies get their equipment dialed in(as was the original intent of the event) much more than what would have happened if we had a timer and everyone was focused on racing. Several experienced FAST racers and semi-experienced slalomers have since approached me stating it was a better event for NOT having a timer and NOT racing but rather just riding and having a good time instead of waiting around as one does when racing. Honestly, if we have the usual number of people show up(multiply the number of signups:49 as of now, by 1.3 to 1.5 = appox 60 to 70 something) and run a "race" with that many people, and try to get newbies dialed in and teach them how to slalom, and BBQ that pretty much will be a mess. We race every other event with a timer competitively, no help to newbies and no BBQ that I want to do something different. I just want to have a big good-vibe slalom session, eat some BBQ and focus on riding and newbies as a way to open the slalom season. I think THE main reason this event has the high number of signups that it has is because it's NOT a race and people just want to ride and ride a lot, eat and blab. It will be the funnest one-day slalom event you will likely ever go to, really. I'm just hoping it isn't getting SO big that it's attracting the wrong attention from the Salem Parks-n-Rec office. OK, enough on this topic - The Management P.S. - Oh yeah, Everyone start doing your "No-Rain" dances specifically for March 31st and April 1st , Actually no, it's was suppossed to be a get-together BBQ slalom session and not a race from the very beginning I started doing it in 2004 but every year some people wanted to race so I let them put a timer on one lane only so those who wanted to race could and those who just wanted to enjoy the other lane and ride a LOT more could ride and not wait around for cone counts, timer problems, tape-switch problems, etc.

Hey, Welcome Back Mike, Sorry but due to multiple requests to NOT have a timer and how much more of a fun successful slalom session and newbie clinic it was last year due to NO TIMER, that's the plan this year. We might put a timer down but only on one run and after a few hours have passed and people get enough runs in since most in attendance are there to RIDE rather than wait around in line and wait for cone-counts, timer glitches, etc, i.e.- they know about our scene but have been avoiding it because they want to ride not wait to be timed. We'll see, I'm sure others will be chomping at the bit to get the timer going and time runs so it probably will happen, just not right away. Thanks- The Management

Plan is to skate some slalom at the Cheney Hill in Tacoma tomorrow morning at 10:00. If it rains, then we will head out to a parking garage that Patrick Alldred knows about in Tacoma. Check here on NCDSA Sunday morning for updates. Email me if you have ques. or need directions

Cat, the offer still stands for all of you to stay with my Wife and Me Saterday and Sunday nights, 5 of you should fit OK, and as long as noone stays too long in the shower there should be enough hot water for everyone. Just bring sleeping bags, pads, and pillows. Our apartment isn't real big but it combines as a Stone-Age Technology and Art Musuem, it's interesting. - P
